What is Prompt?

A prompt is the text you give an AI model to get a response — the question, instruction, and any context that shapes the answer.
A prompt is everything the model reads before it writes: your instruction, the background you give it, examples, rules, and the format you want back. The model doesn't know your intent — it only knows the prompt — so the quality of the prompt sets the ceiling on the quality of the answer.
Short prompts aren't bad and long prompts aren't good. A prompt is good when it removes the guesses the model would otherwise make: who the answer is for, what situation it's in, what exactly counts as done, and what shape the output should take.
You are a paediatric nurse educator. A parent asks why their 4-year-old's fever isn't dangerous at 38.5°C. Explain in 4 short sentences at a 6th-grade reading level, and end with the two signs that mean they should call a doctor.
- Lead with the role and the situation; the task is clearer once those exist.
- Say what "done" looks like — length, format, tone, what to include and avoid.
- Paste real material (the draft, the error, the email) instead of describing it.
- Treat the first answer as a draft: follow up, correct, tighten.
