What is Role prompting?

Also called: persona prompting · act as

Role prompting assigns the model an expert persona ("you are a senior tax accountant") so it draws on the vocabulary, standards and priorities of that role.

Language models learned from text written by every kind of author. Telling the model who it is shifts its output toward what that author would write — the terms they'd use, the caveats they'd add, the structure they'd choose. That's why "you are a recruiter who has read 5,000 cover letters" produces sharper feedback than "give me feedback".

Roles work best when they're specific and paired with a standard: not just the job title, but the experience level, the thing they optimise for, and what they refuse to do. A role without a task is theatre; a task without a role is generic.

Example
You are a senior B2B copywriter who has written 200 SaaS landing pages and optimises for clarity over cleverness. Rewrite this hero section…
How to use it well
  1. Add the role's standard: "…who rejects any claim without a number".
  2. Match the role to the reader, not to the topic: a nurse educator, not a doctor, for a parent-facing explanation.
  3. Don't stack five roles; one precise role beats a committee.
