Basic Chain-of-Thought
For anything with steps — maths, logic, planning — ask the model to work it out before it answers. Reasoning written down is reasoning the model actually does.

What you'll learn
- Three ways to ask: When there are steps, let the model write them. The answer comes out of the steps.
- When to think out loud: Use chain-of-thought for steps, constraints and logic. Skip it for lookups and one-shot writing.
- Make it reason: Reasoning first, answer last. If the answer comes first, the reasoning just defends it.
- A reasoning prompt: Problem → steps → check → answer. The check step catches slips the steps missed.
- Spot the reasoning slip: Visible steps make slips visible. Ask the model to recheck its own arithmetic before the final line.
- The check step: Steps, a check, and flagged assumptions: three lines that make reasoning trustworthy.
